Winter Motivation: Keep Moving Through the Cold
Share
Ah yes… that time of the year has finally arrived.
The season where you begin questioning every life decision as you wrestle yourself out of bed.
“Why did I decide on that morning ride?”
“Why did I book a 5AM gym class?”
“Why did I leave my phone on the other side of the room so I’d actually have to get up to switch off the alarm?”
We get it. Winter motivation can be rough.
It’s dark. It’s cold. It’s raining. The weather feels miserable… and sometimes you do too. But colder seasons shouldn’t be the reason we postpone our goals. In fact, winter is often where the real progress happens. Summer fitness is built during winter consistency.
So, before you hit snooze for the fifth time, here are 8 ways to stay motivated and keep moving during the colder months.
1. Make the Goal Smaller
Instead of saying:
“I need to do a 20 km ride.”
Try:
“I’ll just go outside for 10 minutes.”
The hardest part is usually starting. Once you’re moving, you’ll often end up doing more than you expected.
2. Prepare Everything Beforehand
Winter motivation disappears quickly when there are too many steps involved.
Try:
- laying out your clothes the night before
- charging your lights beforehand
- filling your water bottle in advance
- keeping your gloves, jacket, and helmet together in one spot
The easier it is to leave the house, the more likely you are to go.
3. Dress for the First 10 Minutes
One of the biggest mistakes people make in winter is overdressing.
You should feel slightly chilly when you first step outside. Once your body warms up, you’ll feel much more comfortable.
Winter ride essentials:
- windproof outer layer
- gloves
- neck buff
- warm socks
- layers instead of one thick jacket
4. Don’t Rely on Motivation Every Day
Motivation changes constantly during winter. Systems and routines help more than waiting to “feel motivated.”
Try:
- fixed cycling days
- allowing shorter rides
- having an indoor backup plan
- remembering that minimum effort still counts
Even a quick 15-minute ride helps maintain consistency.
5. Try Indoor Alternatives on Brutal Weather Days
You don’t have to battle terrible weather every single time.
Some great alternatives include:
- stationary bike sessions
- YouTube workouts
- stretching
- indoor strength training
Consistency matters more than perfection.
6. Ride With Other People
It’s much easier to skip a solo ride than one where someone is waiting for you.
You could:
- join local cycling groups
- ride with friends
- find an accountability buddy
- do weekend group rides
- join beginner-friendly cycling communities online
Even one regular cycling partner can make a huge difference during winter.
7. Use Accountability to Your Advantage
Sometimes motivation disappears completely, especially during colder months. Accountability adds just enough external pressure to keep you going.
Try:
- texting a friend after each ride
- sharing weekly goals
- using Strava with friends
- doing weekly check-ins
- planning rides ahead of time instead of deciding based on mood
A lot of people stay consistent because of commitment — not motivation.
8. Make Winter Exercise More Enjoyable
Cold weather feels much easier when you’re sharing the experience with others.
Group rides can mean:
- chatting while riding
- laughing through the tough parts
- coffee stops afterward
- sharing the experience together
Sometimes the social aspect completely changes your relationship with winter exercise.
