We start Women’s Month hot on the trails of the Tour de France Femmes, and this year truly stood as a remarkable 9 days for Africa. For the first time, an African woman has truly shaken up the cycling world. Kim Le Court-Pienaar grabbed the spotlight as the first African rider to rock the Tour de France Femmes leader’s yellow jersey for three days straight. This awesome achievement isn’t just a big deal for women’s cycling; it also showcases the talent and grit that Africa’s women in cycling have to offer.

A Cycling Phenomenon from Mauritius

Kim Le Court-Pienaar has wowed both cycling enthusiasts and newcomers with her impressive performances. Her journey is all about dedication, perseverance, and a real love for cycling. Coming from Mauritius, she first turned heads at the 2015 African Games by landing 1st place in the women’s road race. Since then, she's been climbing the ranks with standout performances at the African Road Championships, Mauritius National Road Championships, and Commonwealth Games.

2024 was a big year for Kim. She achieved multiple top-10 finishes, became the National Champion of Mauritius in road racing and time trials, and made history as the first Mauritian to win a stage at the Giro d’Italia Donne. Besides her road racing wins, she treasures events like the Cape Epic, which she won in 2023. With every race, Kim keeps building her legacy, mixing her love for the sport with a fierce spirit. Her drive for excellence has not only earned her loads of awards but also made her a beacon of hope and inspiration for young female athletes across Africa. Her incredible achievements show her strong dedication and the never-ending support of her team and family.

Le Court-Pienaar's Yellow Jersey Triumph in Tour de France Femmes

On July 27, after the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes, Le Court-Pienaar became the first African woman to wear the prized yellow jersey, marking her as the overall race leader. Even though she lost the jersey the next day to Dutch rider Marianne Vos, she won it back after an amazing performance in the 168 km stage between Chasseneuil-du-Poitou Futuroscope and Guéret, finishing the course in an impressive 3 hours, 54 minutes, and 7 seconds. Her victory not only filled her country with pride but also pointed to a promising future for cycling and more inclusivity in global competitions.

Kim's Trailblazing Success in Women's Cycling

Kim's achievements have amplified her reputation as a top athlete and shone a spotlight on women's cycling in Africa. Her success shows how much the sport is growing, giving more women and Africans the recognition and chances they deserve. Competing with the Belgium-based AG Insurance-Soudal Team, she's done great in Europe, not only with her stage win at the 2024 Giro d'Italia but also taking home the win at the famous Liège-Bastogne-Liège women's race.
